Moving West

Steamboats were lined up at the loading piers. Prince Brandt’s brigade and Normon’s artillery battery had moved down into position to board. Some of the steamboats had been fitted with stalls for the horses. The men would travel on the upper deck.

Rolf and Normon were talking. “Normon,” said Rolf. “When I get to Latene, I intend to ask Yvette to marry me. I’ve talked to my parents, and they approve. I just hope her’s do as well.”

“I don’t expect you to have any trouble there. You are one of Brandt’s advisors, and you will have just helped stop the Nomads from taking the city and killing all of them. That should put you in a pretty good light.

When I get back, Ladoona and I are getting married. I don’t think you’ll be able to be there. But we’d love to have you. She wants to start making babies. Not that I’m complaining, mind you.”

Normon and Rolf laughed. Just then, Garbo came up. “Normon, these steamboats are here to take your battery to Great Falls. You’ll stop several times along the way to muck out the stalls and get new hay. Michael doesn’t want all that horse waste in the river. The farmers aren’t going to complain. They’ll compost that, and it will go on their fields away from the floods.

You’ll have some extra Jorgensens at Great Falls, plus food and supplies. You’re carrying all the ammunition that you’ll need. We’re making more, but it won’t matter for this expedition. Supplies are being assembled in Tandor and Sorbia. Count Michael says to push right on through to Avaricum. That’s where everyone will assemble.

Rolf, pretty much the same for you. Once we’ve got all the steamboats here, they’ll all get stalls for the horses. However, we’re going to move the battery first. I think your brigade will be held at Great Falls until everyone arrives, and then we will go together to Turkmenia.”

The three talked some more, with Garbo answering questions. Rolf then asked. “What about the merchants? Have they been complaining?”

“Of course they have. Complaining about this and about that. I smile and am polite. The really upset ones get to deal with Catrina and Illaria. Mad Catrina and Illaria are not fun at all. They don’t go back for seconds.”

“Ouch.” Said Normon. “Michael says they are wonderful women, just don’t make them mad. Ladoona is like that. I accidentally made her mad once. I do my best to avoid that.”

Normon got his battery loaded onto eight steamboats. It was really a double battery. The cannon and equipment took up four boats, the horses the other four. Normon made sure that he was on one of the boats with the equipment. He’d switch during the trip. But he thought he’d start off without the smell of horse dung. He’d actually have the men switch as well. No need for some not to have the pleasure of smelling the horses.

They stopped three times on the way to Great Falls to muck out the stalls, put in new hay, and give the horses some exercise.
